Today begins a five-part series of projections being featured on ‘Roll Out the Barrel.’ Over the next two weeks, we will highlight by position projected 2013 numbers. Today we begin with the outfielders!
The Milwaukee Brewers starting outfield hit 70 home runs and stole 97 bases in 2012. The same core of guys are back in 2013 and have a chance to improve on those numbers in the new year. The outfield is highlighted by 5-time all-star, Ryan Braun. Braun finished second in the NL MVP voting in 2012 as he hit 41 home runs, drove in 112 runs, scored 108 runs, stole 30 bases, and batted .319. Milwaukee should also be excited about their other two outfield spots that feature up-and-coming Carlos Gomez and second year Japanese outfielder Norichika Aoki.
#8 Ryan Braun LF
Ryan Braun validated his 2011 MVP campaign with a similar season in 2012. Braun led the National League with 41 home runs and became the first Brewers player to hit 40 homers and steal 30 bases in the same season. I look for Braun to have another impressive season in 2013 despite the ongoing biogenesis allegations following him the past two off-seasons.
#27 Carlos Gomez CF
The player I most looking forward to following this season is Carlos Gomez. Gomez is coming off of a career that was highlighted by 19 home runs and 37 stolen bases. If Gomez is able to build off of his power from last season and improve against right-handed pitching, he could be one of the most versatile center fielders in the National League.
#7 Norichika Aoki RF
Nori Aoki had a stellar rookie campaign as he asserted himself into the leadoff spot in the Milwaukee offense. Aoki showed surprising pop in his bat as he hit 10 home runs and had a slugging percentage of .433. Nori was also very aggressive on the base paths as he stole 30 bases in 38 attempts.
